Lo Zen e l'Arte della Manutenzione della Motocicletta

Incipit: Senza togliere la mano dalla manopola sinistra vedo dal mio orologio che sono le otto e mezza. Il vento, anche a cento all'ora, è caldo e umido. Chissà come sarà nel pomeriggio, se già alle otto e mezza c'è tanta afa. 

 Se fai le vacanze in motocicletta le cose assumono un aspetto completamente diverso. In macchina sei sempre in un abitacolo; ci sei abituato e non ti rendi conto che tutto quello che vedi da quel finestrino non è che una dose supplementare di TV. Sei un osservatore passivo e il paesaggio ti scorre accanto noiosissimo dentro una cornice. In moto la cornice non c'è più. Hai un contatto completo con ogni cosa. Non sei uno spettatore, seinella scena, e la sensazione di presenza è travolgente. È incredibile quel cemento che sibila a dieci centimetri dal tuo piede, lo stesso su cui cammini, ed è proprio lì, così sfuocato eppure così vicino che col piede puoi toccarlo quando vuoi – un'esperienza che non si allontana mai dalla coscienza immediata. (p. 14-15) 

 Il Buddha, il Divino, dimora nel circuito di un calcolatore o negli ingranaggi del cambio di una moto con lo stesso agio che in cima a una montagna o nei petali di un fiore. (p. 28) 

 Le strade migliori non collegano mai niente con nient'altro e c'è sempre un'altra strada che ti ci porta più in fretta. (p. 16)

You see things vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.

The romantic mode is primarily inspirational, imaginative, creative, intuitive. Feelings rather than facts predominate. "Art" when it is opposed to "Science" is often romantic. It does not proceed by reason or by laws. It proceeds by feeling, intuition and esthetic conscience. In the northern European cultures the romantic mode is usually associated with femininity, but this is certainly not a necessary association. The classic mode, by contrast, proceeds by reason and by laws... which are themselves underlying forms of thought and behavior. In the European cultures it is primarily a masculine mode and the fields of science, law and medicine are unattractive to women largely for this reason. Although motorcycle riding is romantic, motorcycle maintenance is purely classic.

The solutions all are simple... after you have arrived at them. But they're simple only when you know already what they are.

Talk about rationality can get very confusing unless the things with which rationality deals are also included.
